Abacus CTO Outlines a Four-Pillar Framework for AI in Regulated Firms
In a contributed article for The AI Journal, Abacus CTO Paul Ponzeka sets out how financial services and healthcare firms can move AI out of unmanaged experimentation and into an operating model they can defend in an audit, a client review, or a board meeting. His framework rests on four connected pillars: governance and compliance, enablement and integration, operations and monitoring, and innovation and discovery.
Paul starts with governance and shadow AI in particular. Many firms have not mapped where employees already use AI or what data those tools can reach, and he argues that answering those questions first is what lets a firm move faster later. He also makes the case for running AI with the same discipline as IT and cybersecurity operations. Models drift and regulations change, so a governance posture built once will erode without continuous monitoring.
He closes with recommending an AI Risk & Readiness Assessment as the place to begin for firms. It gives leaders an evidence-based view across all four pillars before they commit to the next use case.
